iRacing Starter Guide

Installing the iRacing Software

Once you become a member of iRacing.com, you’ll receive full access to our member’s site, which is completely different than what the general public sees. This is your iRacing HQ: here, you’ll join sessions, select and purchase different tracks and cars, enroll in race series, view and edit your driver profile, and so much more – this is where you’ll spend most of your time with iRacing. Access this site by clicking “Sign In” on the top of our homepage, or you can go directly to members.iracing.com.

License Classes

Your license class acts as sort of a skill ranking system – it determines which series you are qualified to participate in. Everyone starts off with a rookie license. From there, you can work your way to class D, C, B, A, and if you can make the cut, the Pro license level. Each license level allows you to participate in more race series – iRacing offers over 40 in total.

Series & Sessions

As a rookie – you can participate in one oval, and one road series that will count towards your first license promotion. There’s our Street Stock Series on the oval side, and our Mazda MX-5 Cup Series on the road side.

As for sessions, let’s take a look at the Mazda MX-5 Cup Series as an example. From here, you can select a Practice, Time Trial, or Race session. A Practice session is like a test session with other drivers. Once you get a feel for the car and track in your test sessions, jump into a Practice session to see how you fare in a race environment with other cars on the track. Take note that your Safety Rating is not impacted in Practice Sessions. For your reference, you will still be notified of any incidents you incur. A Time Trial is a solo session for running clean and consistent laps. Keep in mind that time trial sessions are official, which means your Safety Rating will be affected. You must run a certain number of clean laps in order for your Time Trial session to count towards a license promotion. Once you are ready and consistent with your driving skills, go ahead and join your first race.

Your First Race On iRacing!

Once you have decided to race, you need to plan ahead, since races are run at specific times. As an example, for the Mazda MX-5 Cup Series, race sessions are run every hour, on the hour. Register by selecting a race time and and wait until the race session starts.

Customization

Now let’s take a look at customization options. You can customize the look of your car, helmet, and race suit. Head over to this panel to get started. We have a ton of paint templates to choose from, and they’re different for each car. Simply choose a base color, and then your secondary and tertiary colors. Pick a pattern, and it will be applied to your car. Choose up to two sponsors to decorate your car, and feel free to choose a number here. We also offer the ability to create custom paint schemes for your car, which gives you more freedom in designing the look of your car without the help of the web tool. Check out our Custom Paints tutorial if you’re interested in learning more.

You also have the ability to paint your helmet, which’ll act sort of as the avatar of your driving profile. It will appear below your name when posting in the forums.

Begin Your iRacing Career

Now that you’ve completed your first race, you’re well away to launching your iRacing career. With over 40 official series to participate in, there is so much more to discover. Check out our additional How-To tutorials by navigating here, or click on the information tab in the corner of this video. Here you’ll learn how to create hosted sessions, your own private league, loading custom race setups and more.

iracing review

iRacing is the most modern racing simulation ever created. Every inch of every track is modeled perfectly. I've used iRacing to learn new courses such as Virginia International Raceway, or to keep the rust off at tracks such as Infineon Raceway. For the hardcore sim racer, this is your dream simulation. For the real-world racer, this is your 'at-home' test vehicle. www.dalejr.com

iRacing is one of the best tools a young (or veteran) racer can use to better their skills. It’s a huge part of my weekly regimen preparing for the weeks events. Going to new race tracks has never been easier since iRacing has been around. The scans and data that make up the simulation is second to none. It's truly the only way to stay sharp as a race car driver when you can't be on the race track, and for us racing addicts, it’s the perfect fix in-between races!

iRacing really opened doors for me. Now, it has helped open doors for other racers through the new youth league and iRacing initiatives. With iRacing, kids have a chance to get more publicity and experience behind the wheel. If they enjoy it, not only will the sport have a chance to find not only the next generation of drivers but fans as well.
